Writing on the Body

WRITE-602

In this seminar we will consider Ulysses by James Joyce. We will attempt to read this great book like its original readers. We will read it carefully, chapter by chapter, with some but very little outside help. Students will also write one short story during the course of the seminar. They will read portions of this story (description, character sketch, dialogue, scene) each week. So a part of every class will function as a workshop. The story will be built up by the student layer by layer, with Joyce as tutelary spirit. In place of a short story a student may develop a comparable assignment in poetry, playwriting, creative nonfiction, visual criticism, or the visual arts.
