This workshop course will give you a chance to delve into this increasingly popular genre in its myriad forms, including memoir; travel writing; blogs, diaries and journals; literary journalism; graphic texts; personal essay; epistolary; rants and reviews; profiles; lyric essay; and multimedia and hybrid forms. You will learn the craft of turning personal/family obsessions and social/cultural convictions into literary art, with an emphasis on balancing head data (the research and rhetorical devices of journalism and history) with heart data (the storytelling of fiction and lyricism/imagery of poetry). You will also learn the basics of the profession, like doing creative research and pitching stories to editors in the ongoing quest for better living through CNF.
