In our workshop students will write a 500-1,000 word short story each week. These stories will be in a wide variety of manners and styles. During class each story will be read out loud and commented upon for revising, so that at the conclusion of the semester each student will have a completed book of short stories: fifteen short stories, which will be handed in as a group with a cover and title. At the same time, students will read representative short stories or brief selections from other literary works that emphasize the element upon which the short story for that week is based. At the conclusion of the semester students will have acquired a strong foundation of fiction reading in a wide range of writers and styles from different eras and historical periods.
