WRLIT-304

A sampling of writing exploring powerfully original (primary) images and the relationship between writing, death, experimentation, and resistance. We will read poetry, fiction, and cross-genre writing. We will examine the historical context around the composition of each work, how these works both reflected and transcended the literary traditions from which they sprung. We will consider surrealist and Goth writing as modes of social opposition. Our reading will include work by T.S. Eliot, Federico Garcia Lorca, Toni Morrison, Julia Kristeva, Angela Carter, Antonin Artaud, Edgar Allan Poe, and others. We will read for pleasure and inspiration as well as understanding.
