Ancient Roots / Urban Journeys: Expressions for Días de los Muertos
October 10–December 2, 2007

Oakland Museum of California
1000 Oak Street
Oakland, California 94607

Anjee Helstrup Alvarez (Visual Criticism 2003), associate director and curator of Movimiento de Arte y Cultura Latino Americana (MACLA) in San Jose, is guest curator of the Oakland Museum's 2007 Days of the Dead exhibition. This year the exhibition reveals a journey between ancient and urban expressions that connect people to an evolving cultural legacy. The artworks—created by artists, schools, and community groups—will range from traditional Oaxacan-style altars to interpretations that connect to ancient forms as well as those that use popular and urban modes of expression, including graffiti and low-rider and tattoo cultures.

John Leanos (Community Arts faculty) will lead the creation of a CCA installation, working closely with CCA alum Ariel Roman, center program associate Vickie Vertiz, and students from CCA and East Oakland School for the Arts.

For more information on this program please email Vickie Vértiz at vvertiz@cca.edu or call 510.594.3766.
