Since graduating from the University of California, Irvine, in 2001, Mario Ybarra Jr. has created a prolific artistic practice that commingles street culture and fine art. With the idea of reenergizing both the grassroots workshop and the artist-run gallery, Ybarra cofounded the art and community center Slanguage as well as the New Chinatown Barbershop, a gallery and project space in Los Angeles's Chinatown. His work has been exhibited around the world at venues that include Tate Modern, London; PragueBiennale3; and LACMALab, Los Angeles. Ybarra will discuss his recent Capp Street Project residency and his approach to making a mural at the Wattis Institute.
Cosponsored by the Wattis Institute and the Graduate Program in Fine Arts.
