Graduate Studies Lecture Series
Thursday, November 1, 2007, 7 pm

Timken Lecture Hall, San Francisco campus
Info: 415.703.9505

Stanley Fish is one of the world's most influential theorists of interpretation and a major public intellectual in America. He is best known for his theory of interpretive communities, which holds that the significance of aesthetic objects is determined not by the intentions of their makers but rather by the findings of their viewers or readers. He has applied this perspective to discussions of multiculturalism, affirmative action, political correctness, and the nature of political and legal controversies. Fish is currently the Davidson-Kahn Distinguished University Professor of Humanities and Law at Florida International University, and he has previously held academic or administrative positions at the University of Chicago, Duke University, Johns Hopkins University, and the University of California at Berkeley.

This lecture is part of the Chalsty Aesthetics and Philosophy Initiative, made possible by a grant from the Chalsty Foundation.
