Courtney Smith
Furniture Lecture Series
Wednesday, September 19, 2007, 7 pm

Timken Lecture Hall, San Francisco campus

Courtney Smith creates complex, manipulable pieces of deconstructed and reconstructed furniture. Her work transcends its minimalist roots by delighting in the intellectual practice of conjugating order and disorder. Attentive to pattern and repetition but fearlessly rigorous in its construction, it achieves a coy but deeply intelligent sensuality.

Smith has exhibited throughout the United States, Europe, and Latin America. She began her career in Rio de Janeiro, where she lived for 10 years before relocating to New York in 2000. Her work has been exhibited in several prominent Latin American institutions, including Museu de Arte Moderna, São Paulo; Museu de Arte Moderna, Rio de Janeiro; Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Buenos Aires; and Centro de Arte Contemporáneo, Mexico City; as well as the São Paulo Biennial and the Havana Biennial. In Europe she has shown at Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid; Culturgest, Lisbon; and Wilhelm-Hack-Museum, Berlin. In New York she was part of Greater New York (2005) at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, and she recently had a solo retrospective, Tongue in Groove, at the Chelsea Art Museum.
