Abidin Travels
Humor and Irony Communicate Realities of Life in Iraq
November 17, 2007–January 5, 2008

Triple Base Gallery
3041 24th Street, San Francisco

Gallery hours: Thurs.–Sun., noon–5 p.m.
Opening reception: Saturday, Nov. 17, 7–10 p.m.

This visual art installation by Adel Abidin, presented by Montalvo Arts Center and CCA's Graduate Program in Fine Arts (and previously exhibited at the Venice Biennale), mimics a bare-bones travel agency. The artist uses humor, sarcasm, and irony to describe the realities of life in Baghdad.

Visitors will see posters and brochures advertising Iraq as a travel destination; a kiosk for making online reservations and printing tickets; and a bitterly sarcastic promotional video, where Abidin blends a cheerful, American-accented female voice with disturbing video footage showing destroyed buildings, looters and weeping women.
