The Fine Arts division is pleased to present a colloquium on the ethics of making.

As our global community becomes more interconnected, even our smallest actions produce dramatic ripple effects. Every day, the media reveals more practices and policies that are having disastrous effects on human populations, animal species, and ecosystems. Responsible decision making at every level has never been more important.

As makers of culture and meaning, how do we respond as individuals and as a community? How do we balance expression with accountability? This colloquium addresses our choices and how we can take responsibility within the context of artistic practice. The case studies will each focus on a different ethical dilemma. The featured speakers will include Kelly Phillips, associate professor at Emily Carr University of Art + Design, who will discuss ethics and representation, especially the use of animals in contemporary art; and Susan Kingsley, artist, metalsmith, and cofounder of Ethical Metalsmiths, a nonprofit organization leading metalsmiths and jewelers in addressing the complex environmental and social issues associated with mining. Melanie Corn, CCA associate provost, will moderate the panel discussion following the lectures.
