Walter Kirn is an acclaimed fiction and nonfiction writer, whose works include Thumbsucker (Anchor, 1999) and Up in the Air, both of which were adapted to the screen. He has written for the New York Times Book Review, New York Magazine, and the New York Times Sunday Magazine, and has worked as a contributing editor for Time.

Kirn's memoir Lost in the Meritocracy: The Undereducation of an Overachiever (2009) details his educational journey from rural Minnesota to Princeton University. He was interviewed by Stephen Colbert on the Colbert Report in May of that year.
