During the 1960s and 70s, a number of artists left the white cube of the gallery to work within and with the landscape. The works they made became known as the Earthworks, a term Robert Smithson introduced to the readers of Artforum in 1967. Organized by David Spalding, this panel brings together scholars, curators, and practitioners of Earthworks, featuring presentations by pioneering artist Nancy Holt; Matthew Coolidge, founder of the Center for Land Use Interpretation; Stanford University art historian Pamela Lee; and Eugenie Tsai, curator of the upcoming Robert Smithson Retrospective at MOCA in Los Angeles. Introduced and moderated by art historian Julian Myers, the panel will explore the impact of Earthworks on contemporary practice. Cosponsored by the Herringer Family Foundation.
