In his lecture "Mies's Event Space," Detlef Mertins, chair of architecture at the University of Pennsylvania, will examine Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's concept of "universal space." Mies used his architecture to provoke new ways of living, including new ways of displaying and producing art. Looking at the New National Gallery in Berlin, Mertins will speculate on what kind of art Mies might have had in mind and include a history of the actual exhibitions that have been staged there.
