For this exhibition over 50 international artists were invited to propose a monument for the United States. Freed from practical constraints, the proposals—including drawings, maquettes, photocollages, and sculptural models—reflect each artist's ideas about the type of monument the U.S. currently needs or deserves. By turns political, satirical, humorous, idealistic, and prosaic, the proposals redefine our notions of what a monument can be.
