PLAySPACE exhibition
July 19–August 5
PLAySPACE Gallery, San Francisco campus
Gallery hours: Tues. & Thurs. - Sat., 12 - 6 p.m.
Opening reception: July 20, 6 - 9 p.m.
You Can Have It All presents works designed for the viewer to take away, which derive from the artists' investment in altruistic acts that create happiness and social engagement. The multiples will be replenished throughout the show, extending the art beyond the gallery setting.
Whether hand-crafted or mass-printed, these works rely on personal associations with making and receiving gifts, such as Ashley Neese's wall installation of mixtapes and Megan McCready's bottomless, customized M&Ms reminiscent of her mother's perpetually stocked candy dish. Lynn DeClemente's interlocking portraits offer glimpses of her parents' social personalities. Lori Gordon's screen-prints of love imagery and Hope Hilton's hand-written messages in tiny bottles facilitate communication between strangers.
A continuous process of exchange throughout the exhibition is established by Daniel Purbrick's instruction for participants to replace items left on a pedestal. The notion that love is a commodity that needs to be exchanged drives Virginia Kleker's video installations. Susan O'Malley's literature of affirmations distributed to bus guide holders offers a public intervention. Kathryn Sclavi considers gift giving as both a selfish and selfless act through diaries recipients complete and return to the artist, the front cover bearing the reciprocal Latin phrase "Do ut Des" or "I Give So That You Give."
