Mary Heilmann's abstract yet personality-filled paintings draw on influences from music (especially punk) to the forms of colors of the everyday world. Often disarmingly beautiful, her works have a provocative edge, flirting with disruption and the creative potential of the antisocial act. Heilmann has been especially influential among a younger generation of artists who have found in her integrity and independence a way back into the medium of painting. The Orange County Museum of Art and the New Museum of Contemporary Art are coorganizing a retrospective of her work for 2007, which will be accompanied by a catalog from Phaidon.
