Despite winning the prestigious Leipzig Award for the "Most Beautiful Book in the World," Anne Burdick is not a book designer. Rather, she designs spaces for writing out of her Los Angeles studio, where she is engaged in projects spanning diverse media and environments, from poetry installations for the Getty Research Institute, to experimental literature at the Walker Art Center's web-based Gallery 9, to a 1,100-page dictionary for the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Burdick's CCA lecture, "BOOKISH: Tools and Spaces for Reading and Writing," will explore a recent book and website created with literary critic N. Katherine Hayles for MIT Press.
