In the past decade, Paris-based artist Thomas Hirschhorn has emerged as one of the most provocative, ambitious, and inventive figures in contemporary art. Combining disposable and inexpensive materials such as aluminum foil, cardboard, plastic, and masking tape, his displays allude to a wide array of cultural and philosophical topics. Influenced by his graphic design training, Hirschhorn deliberately situates his art as an act of communication between diverse communities, belief systems, and aesthetic strategies.
Speakers: Thomas Hirschhorn; Pamela M. Lee, associate professor of art history, Stanford University; Ralph Rugoff, director, CCA Wattis Institute.
