Alicia Cohen writes: "What is our obligation as lyric poets to other beings? How are contemporary lyric poems, as they plumb and/or rewire our subjectivities, opening up new modes of ethical relation with the world and other beings?" Cohen is a poet, artist, critic, and teacher. Her book of poems, Bear, was published by Handwritten Press in 2000. In 2003 she wrote, directed, and produced a multimedia opera and gallery installation about Portland, Northwest Inhabitation Log. She holds a PhD in poetics from SUNY Buffalo and was recently a visiting professor of English at Reed College. She is a cofounder of the art space collective Pacific Switchboard in Portland, Oregon.
