Peggy M. Phelan is a pioneer in the field of performance studies. She will discuss the legacy and future of Eva Hesse's sculptures, which are made predominantly out of perishable materials. This new, psychoanalytic interpretation of Hesse's practices emphasizes the gravity and sense of loss that pervades the artist's work and sensibilities. Phelan is the Ann O'Day Maples Professor in the Arts at Stanford University.
