Polly Apfelbaum creates what she calls "fallen paintings": accumulative works comprised of myriad dots, bits, and pieces. Arranged on the floor, they grow from a central cluster and spread outward, like paramecia or algae. Crossing traditional boundaries between painting, sculpture, and installation, her hybrid creations combine aspects of post-Impressionism, Abstract Expressionism, Surrealism, Pop art, and Minimalism. Apfelbaum is a graduate of the Tyler School of Art and has exhibited at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia, and the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art, Helsinki. She lives and works in New York.
