Chris Johanson lives and works in Portland, Oregon. He works mostly in painting, drawing, and sculpture, often combining these media to create large, colorful installations that range from the modest to the grandiose. In 2002 he emerged from relative obscurity to sudden international art-stardom when he was included in the Whitney Biennial and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art's SECA award exhibition.
Johanson has no formal art training. Like other artists in San Francisco's home-grown Mission School, he works in a kind of documentary spirit, alluding to the human need for balance and harmony and pointing out good and bad aspects of city life.
