This exhibition is part of The Exhibition Formerly Known as Passengers, a constantly transforming show featuring emerging international contemporary artists. A new presentation opens to the public on the first Tuesday of every month, with a short artist talk at 7 p.m. followed by a reception.

The French artist Aurélien Froment works in a diverse range of media, from film to photography and books, exploring the ways in which narratives, whether documentary or fictional, can be constructed. His solo presentation is the final one in The Exhibition Formerly Known as Passengers.

The artist will stage what one might call a retrospective of the entire exhibition. He will incorporate not only fragments of the artworks that have been presented over the last two years, but also the remains of the permanent exhibition structure—walls, signage, benches, and pedestals.

The central piece will be Modèle d'exposition (2009), based on the popular children's memory game in which a number of paired cards are shuffled and placed face-down on a table, and the players take turns seeking matches. In Froment's version, the faces of 48 pairs of cards show artworks previously displayed in Passengers. The audience is invited to play the game, which is presented on a table and chairs made entirely from Wattis gallery architecture.

Playing with the twists and turns that Passengers has proposed over its run and incorporating the curatorial concerns of the show into his overall concept, Froment goes beyond simply recycling exhibition materials. His show relates strongly to the history of Passengers and also reflects his long-standing interest in archives, museology, and theatrical devices.

Passengers 2.12 Aurélien Froment is kindly supported by Etant donnés: The French-American Fund for Contemporary Art, a program of FACE.
