Chris Noessel and Nathan Shedroff’s book and ongoing project Make It So explores how science fiction films and TV shows inform design, and vice versa. Locating and tracing a surprising number of lines of mutual influence, the authors then develop those lines into a model, or scaffold, to investigate how depictions of technologies evolve over time, how fictional interfaces influence those in the real world, and what lessons interface designers can learn and apply to their work. Their investigation has yielded numerous practical applications for online, social, mobile, and other media interfaces.
Shedroff is a pioneer in the field of experience design and the chair of CCA’s new MBA in Design Strategy Program. Noessel is a senior consultant at Cooper, San Francisco, and teaches interaction design at CCA.
