The designer and furniture maker Michael Puryear runs a one-man shop in the Catskill Mountains, and he is an associate professor of woodworking at the State University of New York, Purchase.
Puryear is self-taught, having honed his craft over the last 25 years through reading and experimentation. In 2009 he won the silver award at the annual Smithsonian Craft Show. His work has been exhibited in museums and galleries around the United States, including the Museum of Arts & Design in New York and the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts. It has been published widely as well, most recently in Lark Books' 500 Chairs and 500 Tables. It is in the collections of the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, the Rockefeller University, and the Newark Museum.
