Artist Talk:
Wednesday, September 9, 3:15–4 p.m.
Ana Fernandez will present her project Museo en una Caja / Museum in a Box, an arts-education tool intended to bring contemporary Ecuadorian art to rural communities and underserved urban populations. Ana uses the box in her artist-run workshops, where it can be handled and passed around, hopefully inspiring those who come into contact with it to create their own art.
The first 20 K-12 teachers who arrive on Wednesday for the artist talk will receive a free Museum in a Box to use in their own classrooms.
Ana Fernandez was born in 1963 and raised in Quito, Ecuador. She graduated from the San Francisco Art Institute with a BFA in painting and received her MFA in Painting and Drawing from CCA. She explores the intersection between the real and the fantastic through drawing, painting, writing, and random street actions.
Ana is currently on the faculty of the School of Fine Arts Central University in Quito. Her program bringing contemporary Ecuadorian art to rural communities is operated through the Central Bank's Cultural Department. Her work has been shown throughout Latin America and Spain, San Francisco, and New York, and it is in many collections in those countries. She represents Ecuador in the Cuenca Biennial.
Ana is a recipient of the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Award, and she was an artist in residence at Women's Studio Workshop, Rosendale, New York. She received a grant to develop an art program in Yunguilla, Ecuador, through CCA's Center for Art and Public Life.
