In a first-time collaboration, the African American Museum & Library at Oakland (AAMLO) and the San Francisco Center for the Book (SFCB) are presenting an exhibit, curated by Hanna Regev, which features work from more than 50 artists working in a variety of media.
The exhibition has a simple premise: artists illustrate one or more of their favorite banned books.
Participating artists interpret a censored text of their choice. The project provides a unique forum for visual artists to respond to the suppression of literary art. The works, which came from book and multimedia artists, take a variety of forms, from a reworked edition of the book itself to sculptures, video, and paintings.
