Malcolm Turvey teaches film studies at Sarah Lawrence College and is an editor of October. He is the author of two books about modernist and avant-garde film and film theory: Doubting Vision: Film and the Revelationist Tradition (Oxford University Press, 2008) and The Filming of Modern Life: European Avant-Garde Film of the 1920s (MIT Press, 2011). He also coedited (with Richard Allen) the collections Wittgenstein, Theory and the Arts (Routledge, 2001) and Camera Obscura, Camera Lucida: Essays in Honor of Annette Michelson (Amsterdam University Press, 2003). He is currently a research fellow at the Stanford Humanities Center, where he is working on a book about Jacques Tati titled Play Time: Jacques Tati and Comedic Modernism.
His lecture this evening will be titled "Cinema, Modernity, and the Avant-Garde."
