California College of the Arts alum Chris Fitzpatrick (MA Curatorial Practice 2009), a San Francisco-based independent curator, writer, and musician, has been selected as one of three young curators to participate in the prestigious Curatorial Residency Programme in Italy, sponsored by Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, an internationally oriented arts center located in Torino, and the Edoardo Garrone Foundation (Fondazione Edoardo Garrone).

An international jury panel composed of Teresa Gleadowe, Carlos Basualdo, Jan Debbaut, and Francesco Bonami selected Fitzpatrick from numerous worldwide nominations to partake in this year's program, the fourth edition of the young curators' residency. Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo provides the young curators with a historical exhibition space located in the township of Guarene d’Alba, near Turin (a major cultural center in northern Italy), for the production of exhibitions, performances, and presentation of contemporary visual arts through a series of publications and events—a valuable instrument for the development of their professional careers.

The annual residency program runs mid-January through May 2010. The young curators will be given a travel budget to visit artists, critics, and institutions throughout Italy, allowing them to conduct extensive firsthand research about the contemporary Italian art scene, as well as "promote a collaboration between emerging Italian artists and young curators working in a site-specific context," as explained by Francesco Bonami, Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo artistic director.

The research process will culminate in an exhibition and a conference cocurated by the selected candidates, together with tutor Stefano Collicelli Cagol, in Guarene d’Alba. The exhibition will open the first week of May and will include a symposium.

“This is a real coup for Chris and for CCA’s Curatorial Practice Program,” commented Leigh Markopoulos, Graduate Program in Curatorial Practice chair. “The Young Curators Residency Programme is in its fourth year, and Chris is our second alum* to be selected for this international distinction. This speaks very well of the quality of our students and faculty.”

* Joseph del Pesco (MA Curatorial Practice 2005) was selected for the Young Curators Residency Programme in 2006.
