The U.S. State Department has commissioned Dugald Stermer, chair of CCA's Illustration Program, to create the 2009 Earth Day poster.
The poster has been commissioned by the U.S. State Department each year since it was founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in in 1970. Today the event is recognized and celebrated internationally.
Challenged with the requirement to address the topic of pollination, Stermer incorporated four major pollinators (hummingbird, bee, butterfly, and bat) and their scientific names into the poster's design.
Although this marks Stermer's first time working for the U.S. State Department, he is no stranger to high-profile commissions. He designed the official medals for the 1984 Olympic Games held in Los Angeles, and his illustrations have been featured in Time, Esquire, the New York Times, the New Yorker, GQ, and Rolling Stone.
