Swivel Garden Cart Rolls in Third in International Housewares Association Student Design Competition

Posted on Wednesday, March 3, 2010, by Jim Norrena

CCA Industrial Design junior Ryan David Francis placed third in the 17th annual International Housewares Association (IHA) student design competition for his Swivel Garden Cart entry. Judged by design professionals and managers at housewares companies, their decisions are based on original product concepts, research, analysis, and clear visual and verbal presentation.

Ryan will receive $1,200 for his impressive placement in the competition, as well as travel to the 2010 International Home + Housewares Show in Chicago March 14–16. There he will explain his product concept and demonstrate his model to a bevy of industry professionals.

According to Industrial Design faculty member Sue Redding: "One thing I think is interesting is that the reason he [Ryan] decided to do a garden product is because his father has a landscaping company and is a gardener. When he wanted to redesign a wheel barrel, I thought, 'How in the world can he redesign this? It's a bowl on wheels you push around.' He really RE-invented something I don't think anyone thought was redesignable. Ryan is a rock star."
