Meet Printmaking Senior Cianna Valley

Posted on Wednesday, February 9, 2011, by Marion Anthonisen

Cianna Valley (Printmaking 2011) came to CCA from Hawaii intending to major in Graphic Design. After her her first-year experience with jewelry and bookmaking, she joined the fine arts division, where she’s been ever since.

Conceptually, Cianna’s meticulously rendered etchings are seamless patchworks of overlapping realities. “It’s like historical documentation of scenes that never happened,” says Cianna. “This is every kitchen I’ve ever been in, mixed into one.” In these scenes, Cianna etches notions of celebration and ceremony through the naïve lens of childhood, when young minds explore heavy concepts “without knowing the weight of them.” Simultaneously maintaining an adult’s point of view, Cianna has developed a depth of perspective that makes her work glow richly with story and an invented sense of place.

One of this year’s recipients of the Yozo Hamaguchi Printmaking Scholarship, Cianna will be unveiling new etchings at her senior show in April. To see some of her current work, check out the slideshow above. Soon, Cianna will be treating us to a video tour of the CCA printmaking studios! Stay tuned.
