Telling Stories with Book and Paper: Maiya Wiester's Tunnel Book

Posted on Monday, March 7, 2011, by Marion Anthonisen

In its historical iterations, the tunnel book often resembled something like small-scale theater design. This sculptural art form still feels wonderfully theatrical, if you imagine the set emerging gracefully from the background to take center stage. To create these pieces, tunnel-book makers arrange a set of images into a dimensional scene and bind the pages with an accordion.

The tunnel book you see here was constructed by sophomore Maiya Wiester in "Telling Stories With Book and Paper," a course taught by Printmaking chair Nance O'Banion. Maiya printed a series of etchings and set them into strategic layers to create the illusion of a multispecies stampede. View the slideshow and explore.

Thanks, Maiya!
