Graduate Program in Curatorial Practice

God Only Knows Who the Audience Is: Performance, Video, and Television Through the Lens of La Mamelle / ART COM (April 21–July 2)
Reception: Thursday, April 21, 6–8 p.m.
This exhibition investigates the notion of "performing" as a medium and a site of mediation. It focuses on works from the 1970s and 1980s, a time when emerging technologies such as the Portapak and cable television were transforming the way that artists documented, shared, and, ultimately, performed their work. ENGAGE at CCA

ENGAGE at CCA is an innovative initiative combining the Community Arts Program’s successful model of community engagement with the project-based learning approach of the architecture and design disciplines. Activated across academic programs, ENGAGE at CCA serves as a hub to connect interested faculty and students to community partners and relevant outside experts.

Under the guidance of Critical Studies faculty Stuart Kendall, students from Textiles to Critical Studies to Curatorial Practice delved into the archives at the Richmond Arts Center to uncover a wide range of cultural artifacts and their historical significance. The course strongly emphasized reflection on the subject matter, as well as its relationship to the students’ given disciplines, resulting in a rich variety of presentation from videos and chapbooks to an archival exhibition.

ENGAGE: Furniture Production 1

In his second ENGAGE course, Furniture faculty Russell Baldon partnered with Yerba Buena Center for the Arts to engage 13 CCA students in responding to the spatial needs of YBCA visitors and staff through furniture proposals. Students have based their ideas on the organization’s four Big Ideas—Dare, Encounter, Reflect, Soar—with the intention that select pieces be installed in YBCA’s Grand Lobby.

Intercultural Gardens

Partnering with Emerson Elementary school in the Temescal District of Oakland, this ENGAGE course is developing curriculum for a K-5 classroom in CCA's Oakland neighborhood and constructing garden spaces on their campus. CCA students and Emerson Elementary youth are looking at a range of contemporary international gardens as models for this perspective, and exploring how specific cities, schools, neighborhoods and immigrant communities are generating gardens that educate and empower their communities, grow food and create social spaces for communication and integration.

Local Fiber Incubator
Sustainable Cotton Project + Windrush Farm / Lynda Grose & Mimi Robinson

Students in Lynda Grose's and Mimi Robinson’s "Local Fiber Incubator" course were challenged to explore the range of local fibers, their textile applications, and local trade outlets in partnership with the Sustainable Cotton Project and Petaluma-based Windrush Farm. Students worked with ranchers, farmers and a local spinner to produce textile prototypes and documentation of local fiber from its harvest to final sale.

ENGAGE: Teaching Practices

In an ongoing partnership with Emery Secondary School and the Emeryville Public Art Commission, students in Trena Noval’s course developed arts curriculum for 8th grade and high school students leading to a series of collaborative public art projects. The projects focus on identity in and outside one’s community, and build upon a review of public artists engaged in culture jamming as well as art organizations and community groups.
