Manhole 452: New Exhibition by Film Faculty Jeanne C. Finley
Posted on Wednesday, April 6, 2011, by Brook Hinton

Patricia Sweetow Gallery is pleased to welcome Jeanne C. Finley and John Muse in presenting their exhibition, MANHOLE 452. On view are charcoal and graphite drawings and a 12-minute film. This exhibition runs through May 14.
A reception for the artists takes place tonight, April 7, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
The drawings and video direct our attention to the shapes, sizes, and patterns of manhole covers on Geary Street in San Francisco, and then plunge deep below into the manholes themselves. Despite assurances from local municipalities, a fact of life is that manholes blow sky high more frequently than most people realize.
The fictionalized film is a first-person narrative that follows the reflections of a middle-age man whose car was hit by an exploding manhole cover and is now forced to ride the 38 Geary Limited bus for the entire length of the street to his job, where he fits prosthetic limbs. His narrative explores an obsession with calculating odds and the possibility of miracles amid the potential presence of random violent occurrences—all captured in a single 12-minute film!
