Remembering Larry Sultan, Photographer and Friend
In June 2011 Photography faculty members Jim Goldberg and Todd Hido (MFA 1996) discussed the influence of their friend and teacher, photographer Larry Sultan, (1946–2009), who taught at CCA for 20 years!

Todd Hido: When did you meet Larry and what did you learn from him?
Jim Goldberg: I met Larry when I moved [to San Francisco] at the end of ’76. I enrolled in a class he was teaching at Lone Mountain College. He was [a few years] out of school. I took what would probably be like a “senior projects” class with him. It was soon thereafter that we became really good friends.
He got me thinking about photography in ways I never had before: about meaning and how an image could be used. And he helped give my work a conceptual framework. He constantly emphasized the diary, and the idea of recording one’s thoughts; of being mindful and looking inward while at the same time [thinking about] how you could be out in the world, and about the strategies of putting one’s work out into the art world. So I think even in that first class I embraced that.
TH: You can definitely see that in your work.
JG: I actually became an assistant to him and [artist] Mike [Mandel], helping them in the making of Evidence, just doing little things. So I had a relationship with them as a team, and then Larry soon thereafter as an individual. Read more »
