Description

Open to all visual artists, graduate and undergraduate, this three-week studio course set in New York is open to the discussion of interdisciplinary art practices with an emphasis on contemporary dialogues around painting.

The class visits the studios of artists who live and work in the area and, through these studio visits, structures its own discussions and projects around questions of new and traditional perspectives in painting in 2012.

The course provides daily studio time during which students work on projects that have been previously proposed to ensure the best use of studio time. Materials, the transportation of work, and time management are discussed in a meeting before students meet in New York.

In addition to visits to painters' studios, participants visit (as a group and individually) galleries, museums, and performances to provide additional class content. Gallery guides, city guides, and the general layout of the museums and galleries are discussed prior to the trip so students can focus on the exact venues that interest them and relate to their work best.

Each student is provided with an individual studio space (about 12 x 18 feet) at the new AICAD Studios in the DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) district in Brooklyn, right on the East River with a view of the Brooklyn Bridge looking over to Manhattan. The program takes place in an enormous renovated building—full of arts organizations—within an architecturally designed space located at 20 Jay Street, Suite M10.

Housing Options

Students are responsible for arranging their own housing, which gives them the flexibility to extend their stay in New York on either side of the class dates. Once students have been notified the class has enough enrollment to proceed, they are encouraged to secure housing as soon as possible.

Female students may arrange for inexpensive accommodations at the Judson Post Hall Residence for Women in Brooklyn. Monthly and daily rates are available. Call 718.875.1190 x 223 for more information.

American Dream Hostel offers an economical four-person dorm room, private single rooms, and doubles. (See also alternative hostel accommodations.)

For a four-week minimum stay, housing is available through the New School University at their William Street residence. Download the additional information (including their housing application form, which is called the "application for summer interns").

For an entire summer in New York, housing is available through the School of Visual Arts or through Educational Housing Service. Educational Housing Service charges a membership fee on top of their room rates. Their summer housing is available from early June to mid- or late August. Check the individual residences for exact dates.

Once you have registered for the course, you may contact Carol Pitts with the Office of Special Programs at cpitts@cca.edu to let her know that you would like to provide your contact information to other students interested in sharing or subletting in New York.

In-person registration begins on Thursday, March 1, for all summer study abroad courses. Students should register no later than Friday, March 30.

Enrollment is limited. Interested students should contact Linda Geary right away to start the approval process for registration.

All CCA Summer Study Abroad courses (including the New Mexico and New York Studios) are coordinated by the Office of Special Programs.
