Who Is Furniture Alumnus Andrew Perkins?
Andrew Perkins (BFA Furniture 2011) thinks in furniture. He wonders how a table can make people smile or how a shelf can bring significance to what we already own. For him, everyday objects have a power and a voice beyond their immediate function. They reflect where and how we exist, both physically and emotionally. He recognizes that the way we live and what we buy needs to change and believes his designs and methods can help.
Born and raised in the Santa Cruz Mountains, Perkins now calls San Francisco his home. Designing and building locally with organic and recyclable materials is central to his work. However, he strongly believes that sustainable design is foremost about the quality and emotional longevity of the object. Perkins strives for this core principle by combining his experience as a cabinetmaker with a world-class education in design.
He knows that if the idea isn't present than the object will not persist.
