This spring, CCA Fashion Design students addressed questions about garment use while participating in Local Wisdom, an ongoing international fashion research project that examines how we use, share, and engage with our clothes.
Several student projects selected as finalists will be featured in spring 2014 in a participatory symposium and exhibition in London, along with work from six other international design schools.

Gregory HURCOMB: This interdisciplinary studio looked to examine the nature of surfaces, color, light and space through the
instigation and eventual transformation of California College of the Art’s main nave space. By utilizing different
digitally and analogue driven techniques such as scripting, collage, physical modeling, photography, rendering, and
drawing, the studio sought to explore the interstices between interior design, installation, art, and architecture.

The first applications, however, are pure art. Lee lead an exhibition at San Francisco’s Intersection for the Arts called By-Product Becomes Product inviting five artists who worked with the new wood material. Their creations range from benches with woven planks to a series of birdhouses and a pickup truck cap. The material was not under much strain (it was neither coated to protect from rain, nor under much load), but Lee says the next step is to start introducing the material as a practical substitute for its conventional but toxic counterparts.

The Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit has named Jens Hoffmann as its senior adjunct curator, reports Mark Stryker of the Detroit Free Press. He will concurrently work as director of exhibitions and public programs at the Jewish Museum, New York. In this new role, Hoffmann will also be responsible for the curatorial program at MOCAD, which includes two to three exhibitions per year.

The recently released episode focuses on Oakland-based ceramicists, Atelier Dion. Owners Jay and Rie Dion are a husband and wife duo who met in 2008 while attending graduate school at California College of the Arts. After graduation, the couple realized that they could use their skills as ceramic artists to create a business focused on custom fabrication. In this episode, they discuss the ins and outs of starting a business and the sacrifices and compromises they have made to get their vision off the ground.

It may be Saturday, but for today’s Shelf Porn class is in session. Matt Silady, chair of the California College of the Arts’ MFA in Comics Program, shares his robust collection of graphic novels and trade paperbacks, which also serves as a lending library for his students. Matt’s a comic creator himself, whose The Homeless Channel was nominated for an Eisner a few years back.

April 13, 2013, was an especially beautiful Saturday in San Francisco, but more than 100 CCA students, faculty, and members of the public shunned the sunshine to pack CCA’s Timken Lecture Hall for the Painting Expanded symposium, an engaging and inspiring series of discussions about contemporary painting.

“At a broad level, Apple has been pretty outstanding because they led by design,” says Kristian Simsarian, chair of California College of the Arts’ undergraduate interaction design program and an IDEO fellow. “That’s really been a great credit to Steve Jobs, because he was one of the few business leaders that would actually make bold decisions, that didn’t necessarily have the quantitative backup which most business leaders want.”
