Announcing the First Annual IMPACT Social Entrepreneurship Award Winners

2011 is the inaugural year of the IMPACT Social Entrepreneurship Awards program, one of the anchor initiatives of CCA's Center for Art and Public Life. This program enables interdisciplinary teams of CCA students to develop and implement social innovations through their studies in art, architecture, design, and writing. We are pleased to announce the winning IMPACT Teams for 2011! Each team has been awarded $10,000 toward their project.

CCA alumnus Banker White (MFA 2000) is a documentary filmmaker. You may know him as the director of Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars, about a group of Sierra Leonean musicians who gained international renown and landed a record deal.

IMPACT Idea Sessions + Connect with a Team

IMPACT Idea Sessions

The Center for Art and Public Life is hosting Idea Sessions for CCA students to discuss project ideas and connect with other students interested in being part of an IMPACT Social Entrepreneurship Award team. Please come ready to discuss social and humanitarian issues you are most passionate about and how you might collaborate through an interdisciplinary team. Meet other students with similar interests and form an IMPACT team. In addition, Center staff will be available to answer any questions about the IMPACT program and the application process.

Hamlet on Alcatraz Island

This fall the performance group We Players will present Shakespeare's Hamlet on Alcatraz Island, and recent graduate Anna Whitehead (MFA Social Practice 2010) has been heavily involved in the project. She was awarded a Center Student Grant to work with at-risk youth, people incarcerated, and people on probation to create large-scale puppets and masks that will be used in the play. Hamlet opens Saturday, October 2, and continues through November 21.

ENGAGE at CCA: 826 Valencia Book Project

In spring 2010 Aimee Phan, CCA Writing and Literature chair, led ENGAGE at CCA: 826 Valencia Book Project. In this course, students collaborated with 826 Valencia to mentor high school students in essay writing, in preparation for a book release.

The college's ENGAGE at CCA initiative acts as a hub to connect CCA students and faculty with a world outside the classroom by using creative practices to solve pressing social needs.

ENGAGE at CCA: Designing Ecology Año Nuevo Island

This past semester participants in the ENGAGE at CCA course "Designing Ecology with Año Neuvo Island" designed, built, and deployed nesting modules for rhinoceros aucklets, an endangered sea bird. CCA Ceramics chair Nathan Lynch and his students collaborated with Oikonos eco-science nonprofit and REBAR art, design, and social activism group to design the nesting modules now in place on the island. Last report from the team was the birds are doing well in their new homes!

CCA Alumna Maria Ryan: Community Arts in Uganda

In August CCA alumna Maria Ryan (BFA Sculpture 2005) started a community arts project in Africa. Maria emailed over the summer letting me know of her continued community arts practice as well as her upcoming project in Uganda. Presence and Absence: Creating Memorials with the Zen Hospice Project

This spring (2012) Anne Wolf will collaborate with the Zen Hospice Project of San Francisco to teach her course "Presence and Absence," which is part of the college's ENGAGE at CCA initiative. Students enrolled in the course will focus their studies on end-of-life care, as they create a series of memorial pillows for the organization's newly renovated Guest House.

Apply Now for 2010–11 Community Service Fellows Work-Study Jobs

Applications for Community Service Fellows (CSF) positions are being accepted September 3–17

The Community Student Fellows program offers work-study opportunities in arts education and community arts to CCA students across all disciplines. CSFs are trained and work in schools and community organizations throughout the Bay Area. Students—sophomore through graduate level—are eligible to apply. (Second-semester freshmen are eligible to apply for spring semester positions.)
