Heather Roberge is a practicing architect and educator in Los Angeles. She is associate vice chair of the Department of Architecture at UCLA, and director of the undergraduate program in architectural studies. She teaches graduate courses in design and technology. Formerly, as coprincipal of Gnuform, she explored an architecture of effective atmospheres through a vitalist-materialist model of practice. Murmur continues these investigations, with a special focus on the spatial, structural, and atmospheric innovation made possible by emerging digital design and manufacturing techniques. Roberge's research focuses on the atmospheric implications of contemporary surfaces with particular interest in formal and material experimentation that engages the senses. Prior to co-founding Gnuform, Roberge worked at Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum, Davis Brody Bond, Architecture Research Office, and Eisenman Architects.

KQED Arts: Highlights from the 2012 CCA MFA Exhibition

Posted on Thursday, May 24, 2012, by Allison Byers

MFA thesis exhibitions, though often overcrowded, are always abuzz with the excitement of eager, budding talent. This year's presentation at California College of the Arts, up through May 19, 2012, is no different. There are over four-dozen artists in the show, each ranging wildly in style, medium, and conceptual aims; selecting a half-dozen thesis students to highlight is no easy task. I can assure, at the very least, that in this bustling and ambitious show, there is something for everyone.

An Evening with David Sedaris Raises $231,000 for CCA Scholarships

Posted on Monday, May 21, 2012, by Chris Bliss

CCA trustees Noel Perry and Ann Morhauser, CCA President Steve Beal, KQED's Michael Krasny, and event chair Kay Kimpton Walker

Best-selling author and NPR humorist David Sedaris is one of the funniest and smartest writers working today and he did not disappoint the sold-out crowd of 2,000 at the special CCA benefit reading on May 3 at Zellerbach Auditorium in Berkeley. Gathering thunderclouds and bumper-to-bumper traffic couldn’t deter CCA supporters and diehard fans from their goal of hearing Sedaris “talk pretty,” although some of his commentary -- which ranged from colonoscopies to a macabre search for the perfect Valentine’s Day present -- wouldn’t necessarily qualify as pretty.

Art Practical: Tammy Rae Carland

Posted on Thursday, May 17, 2012, by Allison Byers

Contradictory as it may seem, absence can be a potent visual tool for addressing representation. Whether exploring a setting devoid of its central subjects or presenting marginalized histories and persons that have been sidelined from the dominant cultural record, Tammy Rae Carland’s photographs can manifest human intimacies and vulnerabilities, sometimes without any body in the image.
