Jackilyn Roberts wished to memorialize and celebrate the people of Chinatown in a garment. It contains the illusion of layers from the front to the back, mimicking a Chinese sensibility while retaining a modern yet elegant sculptural aesthetic. The fabrics are essential to the meaning of the piece. The outer shell is of off-white muslin intended to memorialize those who have died, and the vibrant red inner shell represents life and celebration.
