Steven Soundara's project is inspired by the Hunters Point neighborhood, a highly toxic area due to its long industrial history. Its residents report unusually high rates of cancer and respiratory illness. To express via fashion design the idea of being slowly poisoned by one's environment, he created a work jacket of black canvas with a water-resistant wax finish. The idea of toxicity is expressed through the lining, which is a jaundiced yellow shredded fabric.
