When designing the ceramic ware for the Refract House featured at the 2009 Solar Decathlon, McFlynn and Matthew Harvey (BFA Glass 2007) applied a similar sustainable model, namely by using local and recycled materials -- a blend of local California clay, called "Happy Clay," mined near Sacramento, and the glaze consisted of only three components: 70 percent recycled green-tinted cava bottles (from Chez Panisse) ground in a ball mill to a fine powder called frit; 30 percent local clay; and the boiled juice from ochra was added to the glaze as a binder making it more fluid during application.
