Hybrid Lab (SF)

About the Hybrid Lab

CCA's newest in innovative efforts is a state-of-the art, cross-disciplinary Hybrid Lab. The Hybrid Lab is a shared interdisciplinary space for making with technology that is built around the principles of being open, fast, and inspiring.

Enabling the hacker mentality, this is a place where sparks become concepts and concepts become prototypes as quickly as possible.

Students have easy access to supplies and materials can be checked out or purchased from the lab.

The following Hybrid Lab equipment is available for use and checkout:

  • Arduinos & Shields
  • 3D Printer
  • PCB Mill
  • Multimeters
  • Oscilloscopes
  • Power supplies
  • Soldering stations
  • Various electronic components (resistors, capacitors, LEDs, ICs, wire, etc.)
  • Tablets (iOS & Android)
  • Webcams
  • Kinects

Staffed hours are held in the lab to ensure students can access any necessary assistance.

Need for a Hybrid Lab

Interactive technology is emerging as a creative material in every division at the college -- at both the undergraduate and graduate levels:

Architecture: in contemporary structures

Design: Industrial Design, Fashion Design, Furniture, Graphic Design, and Interaction Design

Fine arts: Film, Animation, and Sculpture

Humanities and sciences: within science and math curricula

All around the college, in closets and basements, outposts of technology practice have been emerging. Outside CCA a growing maker movement of interactive technologies in art and design exists. These technologies are becoming more powerful and more accessible for the nontechnology-trained artist.
