The Associate Vice President of Advancement is a senior fundraiser and administrator who leads the California College of the Arts individual giving and alumni relations programs. This position will expand the scope and effectiveness of annual individual fundraising and alumni relations as well as help prepare for a future capital campaign to support expansion of the San Francisco campus. Manages the alumni relations team and the individual giving team to create and implement a coordinated college-wide strategy for engagement with alumni, parents, and friends. Their strategy maximizes giving from these three constituencies. Works directly with trustees, faculty, and senior staff to identify, cultivate, and solicit major gift prospects. Overall is responsible for meeting individual giving team goals and alumni engagement goals while taking personal responsibility for meeting the major gift income goal. Develops comprehensive plan for prioritization of prospects (w/local and regional strategies). Supervises two junior fundraisers who work on lower level giving (direct mail, email and telefund) and events that advance the goals of the individual giving division. In addition, supervises the alumni relations director who works with an assistant to develop and implement programming that engages alumni in the life of the college.
REPORTS TO: Senior Vice President
• Manages individual giving and donor benefits structure to ensure coherent and effective plan of cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship for all individuals. This includes prospect identification, donor acquisition, renewal, and upgrade activities.
• Creates and implements annual plan for individual solicitations, donor campaigns, stewardship, and prospect management. Creates written plan for the individual giving division including goals/objectives/strategies, projected annual expense and revenue and a timeline for implementation.
• Is highly knowledgeable about major gift prospect pool and donor base and tailors efforts accordingly. Monitors prospect contact to ensure positive and purposeful donor relations. Moves potential donors in an appropriate and timely fashion toward solicitation. Helps identify best solicitor and request amount. Prepares trustees, faculty, and senior staff to cultivate and solicit donors. Personally solicits in partnership and solo. Maintains stewardship contact with donors while adhering to the highest ethical standards. Demonstrates perseverance and positive attitude while conveying sensitivity to the needs of the donor.
• Supervises the Individual Giving Manager in achieving the revenue goal for lower-level gifts. Is knowledgeable about and experienced in the use of lower level solicitation strategies such as direct mail, telefundraising, and online solicitations. Ensures that lower level giving plans are constructed to maximize acquisition, renewal, and upgrade.
• Supervises Events Manager in creating, implementing and evaluating the annual calendar of stewardship and fundraising events. Ensures that events meet goals for attendance, content, revenue/expense, and active cultivation by CCA representatives.
• Supervises the Director of Alumni Relations in that position’s work to create and implement programs that cultivate a vital and inclusive alumni community. Oversees planning, implementation, and evaluation of alumni programs that: 1) forge enduring bonds among graduates and between alumni and the college; 2) celebrate alumni accomplishments; 3) cultivate alumni donors, leaders, and volunteers.
• Ensures that alumni relations programming is purposeful in its cultivation of strong ties that inspire philanthropy. Shapes alumni engagement plans on two tracks – one for key alumni who may benefit from individualized cultivation plans and another for the broad base of alumni who will be cultivated as a group.
• Maintains and tracks individual giving revenue and expense budget throughout the year.
• Reports on individual giving and alumni relations at Advancement Committee of the Board of Trustees.
• Prepares for successful solicitations by strategizing with Senior VP, key senior staff, and donor contacts such as trustees and volunteers. Works with in-house and contract research to obtain relevant background to shape ask amount and inform areas of donor interest. Ensures maintenance of up-to-date database and hard files for individual donors and prospects with call reports and relevant research data. Works in partnership with gift processing staff to ensure that gifts are coded correctly and donors are thanked appropriately.
• Writes creative and compelling copy for individual donor proposals, case statements, brochures, invitations and other correspondence. Ensures written materials (including proposal budgets) are accurate, articulate, well targeted, and well reasoned. Ensures that donor materials are high quality, cost effective, well designed, and appropriate for their audience.
• Creates and implements planned giving program. Creates materials, identifies prospects, and stewards current planned gift donors. Develops multi-year strategy to expand planned gifts effort, ensuring that efforts are cost effective.
• Manages the Curators Forum donor group and the Salon Circle donor group. Works with volunteer chairs to plan their year of programs, to identify new prospects, and solicit new and renewal members. Develops and fulfills donor cultivation/stewardship programs for this group.
• Make effective use of leveraging tool such as matching gift challenges to inspire new and increased gifts.
• Manages and mentors lower level staff to help their professional development and effectiveness within the department and the College as a whole.
BA/BS and three or more years of significant individual giving fundraising and management experience, preferably within an educational institution. Excellent communication skills with demonstrated ability to engage donors in-person and in writing through articulate, compelling, and well reasoned proposals. Successful track record of in-person solicitations. Experience planning donor events. Experience working at a school with parent and alumni constituencies a plus. Must be energetic, creative, and resourceful, and demonstrate initiative in seeking increased contributions. Exceptional organizational skills, with the ability to work on deadline and manage multiple assignments at once. Strong analytical and budgeting skills. Outstanding leadership, interpersonal, and mentoring skills, including the ability to work well with staff, trustees, faculty, and volunteers. A proven record of working cooperatively as part of a team and demonstrating flexibility and ability to compromise to achieve goals in tandem with project partners. Supervisory experience required. PC proficiency (MS Office Suite in Windows environment); facility w/ Word and Excel required. Work with fundraising database software required, Raiser’s Edge preferred.
