BT: Future Construction

This seminar will survey and research the ongoing building industry shift towards increased use of factory-built components, and the reduction in site-crafted construction. We will particularly focus on the changing role of the architect, and the architect's tools, and their opportunity to shape the direction of Future Construction through understanding the digital and physical implications of component-based design, fabrication and assembly. Through lectures, readings, and hands-on making, this seminar will explore the strengths and limitations of component-based architecture, and seek to change the way we think about the making and use of architecture. Testing our theories and understandings, we will engage with multiple design-build projects going on at the school this spring by working alongside their primary designers, learning from and contributing to the projects of making that will be happening around us.
