The Artist in Society

How do artists interact with society, expanding their practice to shape civic life through social and political engagement and participatory activities? Organized in three sections, Art and Civic Life, Art and Political Change, and Artist as Teacher this class will explore history, contemporary art practice and global perspectives. Using a balance of historical readings and contemporary models for developing a community and socially engaged practice, we will look at the way artists work in public space, address environmental concerns and appropriate social forms such as stores, restaurants and trials in addressing contemporary social and political issues. Through field-based research, meetings with visiting artists, and a culminating written and oral presentation we will explore the potentials of artistic practice in contemporary social realms.
