Denise Newman is a multi-media poet and translator, involved in video, installation, and social practice projects. Through a Creative Work Fund grant in 2015, she created a multi-component poetry installation in collaboration with Hazel White at the UC Berkeley Botanical Garden. This work can be viewed at the project website Her poetry collections are: Future People, The New Make BelieveWild Goods,and Human Forest. She is the translator of the novels Azorno and The Painted Room by the late Danish poet Inger Christensen. She received an NEA to complete her translation of the short story collection Baboon by the Danish writer Naja Marie Aidt,for which she received the PEN Translation Prize in 2015. Her poems, collaborations, and translations have appeared in Denver Quarterly, Volt, Fence, New American Writing, 6 x 6, ZYZZYVA, and elsewhere, and critical essays on poetry off the page projects have been published in World Literature Today. For many years Newman has been collaborating with composers, providing lyrics for choral works and songs, including the libretto for Pandora’s Gift, a three-act staged work for children and adult choirs, performed at Z Space in 2014.
