As the principal of Virtual Practice Consulting, Michael S. Bernard, AIA, Architect, is mentor and monitor to design firms that neither have nor need a full-time managing principal. Michael collaborates with firm owners to address the vital tasks that sustain the design practice: development of revenue and growth models appropriate to the size and function of the firm; strategic marketing and business development, development and monitoring of fee projections; review and preparation of contracts and scopes of work; fee development for services and project schedules; and mentoring of senior staff to foster their development as effective project managers. In addition to working with architects, Michael’s clients include landscape architects, interior designers, lighting designers and general contractors.
In addition to design practice management consulting, Michael is adjunct professor in the Architecture Department at The California College of the Arts, San Francisco. In Fall 2010, he consulted with Public Architecture in the NEA-funded realization of three site-specific art installations along San Francisco’s Central Market Street district. He recently completed his term as a Board member of the AIA California Council. Michael continues to serve as Architect-Advisor to the AIACC Academy for Emerging Professionals.
